I woke up at 5.50am and opened the curtains a bit to check the weather – it was good! Clear blue skies, not a cloud in sight. I nudged Laura (as had been pre-arranged the night before) but as expected she decided it was too early and that the bed was too comfy, so I left her to sleep in.
I grabbed all my stuff and made my way to the car. The Jeep said it was 4 degrees outside and it felt it. The sun had risen but hadn't quite yet appeared above the mountains. I drove to Pyramid Lake and stopped on the way at Patricia Lake. The clear skies, still lake and rolling mist made for a lovely photo. There was a Japanese couple there, but other than them we had the place to ourselves.
I drove on to Pyramid Lake, but the mist was too thick and the sun too low, so I drove back to Patricia Lake and spent a good 15-20 minutes stood taking pictures and admiring the view. By this time I was completely alone and it was very calm and still.
After the sun had appeared I could see over the trees that the mist was clearing from near Pyramid Lake so I drove back around and took some more photos. Unlike yesterday I had Pyramid Island to myself.
Everything looked beautiful in the morning sunlight and I was very pleased I’d got up early. I took a few more photos but it was now after 7.00am and I knew we had a big day of driving ahead of us so I headed back to the hotel with a spring in my step. On the way I came across an Elk stood beside the side of the road. It looked magnificent with the sun behind it, lighting up its antlers. I pulled over and grabbed my camera, but a couple of cars came the other way and scared it off. Damn! Never mind. I snapped a photo in my mind instead.
